Effects of allelochemical extracts from medicinal plants on physiological and biochemical mechanisms of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings

چکیده
Aqueous extract of Ricinus communis and Lantana camara contains substances that have allelopathic potential on maize (Zea mays L.). The present study showed that different concentrations of the water soluble leaf extracts of R. communis and L. camara inhibit the germination and growth of maize. These extracts also affect activity of some enzymes. Leaf aqueous extracts of both the plants were made to determine their effects on germination, seedling growth, fresh and dry weight of root and shoot and their effects on activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), Catalase (CAT), polyphenoloxidase (PPO) of root and shoot and lipidperoxidatio (MDA) of root of 8 d old maize seedlings. Results revealed that higher concentration of Lantana camara leaf extract exhibited significant inhibitory effect on germination and seedling growth. The biochemical assay indicate that the Ricinus communis and Lantana camara leaf extracts at higher concentration of 1.2% have increased the SOD, POD and CAT activity of root as compared to control. The enzyme activity of shoot was not significantly increased by the Ricinus communis and Lantana camara leaf extract except the catalase activity. The allelopathic effect of these extracts was more pronounced on root than the shoot parts. The higher concentration of extracts had stronger inhibitory effects, whereas the lower concentrations showed stimulatory effect in some cases. * Corresponding Author: Rabia Naz [email protected] International Journal of Agronomy and Agricultural Research (IJAAR) ISSN: 2223-7054 (Print) 2225-3610 (Online) http://www.innspub.net Vol. 5, No. 2, p. 31-39, 2014 International Journal of Agronomy and Agricultural Research (IJAAR) ISSN: 2223-7054 (Print) 2225-3610 (Online) http://www.innspub.net Vol. 5, No. 1, p. 14-22, 2014

Effects of aluminum toxicity on maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings. Parviz Malekzadeh1*, Reza Sheikhakbari Mehr1 and Ali Asghar Hatamnia2
Aluminum toxicity is one of the most deleterious factors for plant growth in acidic soils because over 50% of the world’s potentially arable lands are acidic. In recent years, considerable research has been conducted to understand the mechanisms of Al toxicity and tolerance in plants. This paper reviews the effects of different concentration of Al on plant shoot, root physiological parameters s...

Salinity stress is one of the most important abiotic stresses that effects on many agronomic, nutritional, physiological and biochemical processes of crops. A factorial experiment based on completely randomize design with four replications under laboratory conditions with four maize hybrids (SC640, SC704, SC740 and SC Simon) and three levels of salt stress (0, 100 and 200 mM NaCl) was carr...

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR) on physiological and biochemical properties of maize (Zea mays L.) in different cultivation methods under water stress. The experiment was carried out as split-plot design including water stress (well-watered, mild stress, and severe stress) as main plot and also cultiv...

Salinity is a major abiotic-stress worldwide which decreases crop growth productivity. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether salt stress has adverse effects on growth, photosynthetic efficiency, biochemical properties and nutrient status of maize. An experiment was carried out with seeds of four varieties of maize which were allowed to germinate for one week. Afterwards,...
متن کاملCombining Ability Study of Biochemical and Physiological Traits of Maize (Zea mays L.) Using fourth Dialllel Griffing’s Method
Biochemical and physiological traits are affected by environmental stresses and therefore the breeding of these traits will play an effective role in stress tolerance. In this study, hybrids of five S7 lines of maize in a 5 × 5 half-diallel design were investigated in order to study the combining ability of biochemical and physiological traits of maize at the Research Farm of Graduate Universit...
